This curricular unit aims at giving students a broad knowledge of several classes of secondary metabolites (commonly known as Natural Products) produced by marine macro- and microorganisms as well as their potential applications in pharmaceutical, cosmeceutical and food industries.
Additionally, this curricular unit also intends to give the students an opportunity to learn the methods of extraction, purification and structure elucidation as well as some bioassays to evaluate some biological activities of marine natural products.
It is expected that, as a result of this Curricular Unit, the students are able to acquire a capacity to distinguish, identify and evaluate various classes of bioactive compounds produced by marine organisms for industrial application.

The main objective of this curricular unit (UC) is to provide the students with knowledge that allows them to:
- Understand the population growth models for isolated or interacting populations;
- Analyze the results of simulations under different scenarios defined by model parameters;
- Interpret results from different simulations;
- Critically evaluate and discuss related literature.
Topics studied and tools used in this UC will allow the student to acquire skills useful for future work in the area of conservation and sustainable management of biological communities and ecosystems.
